A response shows qualities from more than one level. Explain how the assessor should decide both the level and the mark within that level, using the guidance's level 3 and level 4 example.
Model answer
What a good answer should say
- The assessor should use a best fit approach to decide which level represents the response overall.
- The work should not automatically be placed in the highest level because it contains a small amount of higher-level material.
- If it is predominantly level 3 with only a small amount of level 4 material, it should be placed in level 3.
- The level 4 material can then be used to award a mark near the top of level 3.
Explanation
Why this works
The selected level reflects the predominant overall quality. Higher-level features can influence the position within that level, but a small amount of higher-level work does not by itself move the whole response into that higher level.
