Why it matters
This objective helps connect Calculation requirements to exam-style questions, flashcards, and revision notes for Quantitative skills in business.
Quick student answer
A small manufacturer produced the following numbers of units in the first six months of the year: 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, 450. Calculate the average monthly production and state what this figure tells you about the company’s production trend.
Direct answer
1,275 units per month. The average indicates that production is increasing steadily, as each month’s output is higher than the previous month.
How it works
Sum the six monthly figures: 200 + 250 + 300 + 350 + 400 + 450 = 1,950. Divide by 6 months: 1,950 ÷ 6 = 325. (Note: correct calculation is 325 units per month, not 1,275. The answer should be 325 units per month.) The average shows the typical monthly output; a rising sequence suggests growth, but the average alone does not reveal the rate of increase.
Key terms
- Average: The arithmetic mean of a set of numbers, calculated by adding all values and dividing by the count of values.
Common trap
Confusing average with median: The average is the sum of all values divided by the number of values, not the middle value.
