Learning objective

Understand and explain the factors leading to soil erosion and its consequences. This includes: identifying the reasons for soil erosion such as the clearing of vegetation due to excessive farming and grazing, as well as erosion caused by water and wind. Additionally, explain the effects of soil erosion, which encompass habitat loss, desertification, river silting, population displacement, and issues like malnutrition and famine.

Description

Causes of Soil Erosion

Soil erosion occurs when vegetation is cleared for farming and grazing, exposing soil to erosion by water and wind. Water erosion happens when rain or rivers wash soil away. Wind erosion occurs when strong winds blow loose soil particles off bare land.

  1. a

Identify two human activities that cause soil erosion.

Aim for approximately 2 distinct marking points.

    [2]
  2. b

Explain two consequences of soil erosion for the environment or people.

Aim for approximately 4 distinct marking points.
