Paper 1Theory3 marks

Acid rain and ozone layer depletion are significant environmental problems caused by atmospheric pollution.

Description

Acid Rain and Ozone Depletion

Acid rain forms when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) react with water vapor in the atmosphere. The ozone layer is depleted by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which break down ozone molecules in the stratosphere.

  1. a

Explain how acid rain is formed and one effect it has on the environment.

Description

Smog and Temperature Inversion

Smog is a type of air pollution formed when volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from industrial activities and vehicle emissions react with sunlight. Temperature inversion occurs when a layer of warm air traps cooler air near the ground, preventing pollutants from dispersing.

  1. a

Describe how temperature inversion affects smog levels in a city.

Aim for approximately 2 distinct marking points.
