Preclinical testing then takes place, typically involving laboratory and animal studies, to assess basic safety and efficacy before human trials. The most critical and extensive phase is clinical testing, conducted in humans over several stages. Throughout this journey, strict regulations and ethical considerations are paramount to protect patients and ensure that only safe, effective medicines reach the market.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are diseases passed from one person to another through sexual contact. These infections can be caused by various pathogens, including bacteria and viruses. Two significant examples are Chlamydia, caused by bacteria, and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), caused by a virus. Chlamydia is typically spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It often has no obvious symptoms, leading to delayed diagnosis and potential complications like pelvic inflammatory disease or infertility if untreated. HIV is transmitted through contact with specific bodily fluids, most commonly during unprotected sexual activity, but also via shared needles or from mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth. HIV targets immune cells, weakening the body's defence system. While Chlamydia is treatable with antibiotics, there is no cure for HIV, though antiretroviral therapies can manage the condition effectively. Prevention strategies for both types of STIs primarily involve consistent and correct condom use, regular testing, reducing the number of sexual partners, and practicing safe injecting habits. Education about safer sexual practices and immediate access to appropriate medical care are crucial in controlling their spread.
