Electrolytes are substances that conduct electricity when they are in a specific physical state. Crucially, electrolytes must be ionic compounds. They can conduct electricity either when they are melted (in a molten state) or when they are dissolved in water to form a solution. In both these states, the ions within the ionic compound are free to move. This movement of charged particles is what allows electrical current to flow through the substance.
Understanding pH and Solution Types
The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. A neutral solution has a pH exactly equal to 7. Solutions with a pH lower than 7 are classified as acidic, while those with a pH higher than 7 are considered alkaline (or basic). K
The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. A neutral solution has a pH exactly equal to 7. Solutions with a pH lower than 7 are classified as acidic, while those with a pH higher than 7 are considered alkaline (or basic). Knowing the pH helps identify the nature of a solution.
