Percentile charts are graphical tools used to track an individual's growth patterns, such as height, weight, or head circumference, over time. They display a range of measurements, often from the 3rd to the 97th percentile, for a particular age and gender group. Each curved line on the chart represents a specific percentile, indicating what percentage of the population at that age and gender falls below that line. For example, if a child's weight is on the 50th percentile, it means that 50% of children of the same age and gender weigh less than them, and 50% weigh more. Healthcare professionals use these charts to identify normal growth, monitor progress, and detect potential growth problems or deviations from a healthy pattern. Continued measurement on a consistent percentile line generally indicates healthy growth, while significant drops or increases across percentile lines may warrant further investigation.
