Networks facilitate communication and resource sharing among connected devices. Two fundamental categories of networks are Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). A LAN connects devices over a small geographical area, such as a home, office, or school building. It is typically owned and controlled by a single organisation, offering high-speed data transmission within its confined space. Conversely, a WAN spans a large geographical area, linking multiple LANs together, often across cities, countries, or even continents. The internet is the most prominent example of a WAN. WANs typically rely on public or leased telecommunication lines and are managed by multiple service providers, leading to slower speeds and higher costs compared to LANs, but offering far greater reach.

Protocols are essential sets of rules that govern how data is formatted, transmitted, and received across networks. Without these strict rules, different devices and systems would be unable to communicate effectively, leading to chaos and unreliability. Network protocols, such as Ethernet and Wi-Fi, define how data is sent over local area networks (LANs) and wireless connections respectively. TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is a foundational suite of protocols that enables communication over the internet, handling addressing, routing, and reliable data delivery. HTTP and HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol and Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol) are crucial for web browsing, with HTTPS adding a layer of encryption for secure data exchange. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is used for transferring files between computers. Email protocols, like POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3), SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol), and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol), manage the sending and receiving of emails, each with distinct functionalities for handling mailboxes and message retrieval.
