Roger Sperry's pioneering 1968 study investigated the effects of severing the corpus callosum, a large bundle of nerve fibers connecting the two cerebral hemispheres. This surgical procedure, known as commissurotomy, was performed on patients with severe epilepsy to prevent seizures from spreading across the brain. Sperry's research aimed to understand the specialized functions unique to each hemisphere and how they communicate when not connected. He discovered that each hemisphere could process information and act largely independently. For example, information presented to the left visual field (processed by the right hemisphere) could not be verbalized, but the patient could use their left hand to select the corresponding object. Conversely, information presented to the right visual field (processed by the left hemisphere) could be easily described verbally. This work provided critical insights into hemispheric lateralization, establishing the left hemisphere's dominance for language and the right hemisphere's role in visuospatial tasks. It revealed that each hemisphere possesses a distinct cognitive awareness.
