Gene technology, including gene therapy and genetic screening, offers significant potential for treating and preventing human diseases. One major benefit is the ability to correct genetic defects responsible for inherited disorders like cystic fibrosis or Huntington's disease, by replacing faulty genes with functional ones. This could offer cures rather than just symptom management. Another benefit is the development of more effective and personalised medicines. Genetic screening can identify individuals at high risk for certain diseases, allowing for early intervention or preventative measures. Gene technology can also be used to produce therapeutic proteins, such as insulin for diabetes, in large quantities using genetically modified organisms.
However, gene technology also carries risks and ethical concerns. One risk is the potential for unintended side effects during gene therapy, such as an immune response to the viral vectors used to deliver genes, or the inserted gene causing new mutations. There are also concerns about the long-term effects of altering a person's genome, especially if changes are made to germline cells (sperm or egg cells), which would be inherited by future generations. Ethical debates arise around the concept of 'designer babies' and the potential for gene technology to be used for non-medical enhancements, leading to social inequalities. The cost of gene therapies is another significant barrier, making them inaccessible to many. Furthermore, the privacy and security of genetic data are major concerns, as this information is highly personal and could be misused if it falls into the wrong hands. Careful regulation and public discussion are essential to navigate these complex issues responsibly.
