An embedded system is a computer system with a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electronic system, often with real-time computing constraints. Unlike a general-purpose computer that can perform various tasks, an embedded system is designed to do one or a few specific jobs very efficiently. These systems are ubiquitous, found in everything from household appliances like microwaves and washing machines to more complex devices such as medical equipment, automotive systems, and aerospace technology. Key characteristics include their often small size, low power consumption, and resilience to harsh environments. They typically feature a microcontroller or microprocessor as their core, along with memory (both volatile and non-volatile), input/output peripherals, and specific software (firmware) tailored to their function. The software is often stored in ROM or flash memory. The design process for embedded systems involves a careful balance of hardware and software components to meet performance, cost, and reliability requirements for their specific application. Understanding embedded systems requires grasping how dedicated hardware and software collaborate to achieve a precise function, often with constraints on resources and timing.
