The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the United States and its allies (the Western Bloc) and the Soviet Union and its allies (the Eastern Bloc) from the mid-1940s until the early 1990s. In Europe, the immediate post-World War II period saw the rapid emergence of this ideological conflict. The division of Germany and Berlin became a central symbol of this rivalry. The USSR sought to expand its influence in Eastern Europe, creating a buffer zone of communist states, often referred to as the 'Iron Curtain' by Winston Churchill. This expansion was met with Western policies of containment, primarily through economic aid like the Marshall Plan and military alliances such as NATO. The Berlin Blockade (1948-1949) was an early major crisis, where the Soviets attempted to cut off land access to West Berlin, leading to the Berlin Airlift. The construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 solidified the physical division of Germany and represented a stark symbol of the Cold War's impact on European lives. Key events and policies such as the Truman Doctrine, the formation of COMECON and the Warsaw Pact, and the arms race (including nuclear weapons development) escalated tensions, creating a highly volatile but largely non-violent confrontation between the superpowers in Europe during this initial phase.
