Estimation is a fundamental mathematical skill used to find an approximate value of a calculation or quantity, rather than an exact one. It involves simplifying numbers, typically by rounding them to one significant figure, before performing the calculation. The goal of estimation is to quickly obtain a reasonable answer that is close to the true value, which can be useful for checking the plausibility of an exact calculation, making quick decisions, or when precision is not required. For example, if you need to buy 3 items costing £4.95, £9.80, and £1.20, you can estimate the total cost by rounding these to £5, £10, and £1 respectively, giving an estimated total of £16. This quick estimate allows you to work out if you have enough money without a precise calculation. In more complex scenarios, such as estimating the area of an irregular shape or the number of people in a large crowd, estimation methods might involve making reasoned assumptions or visual approximations. Mastering estimation requires a good understanding of place value and rounding rules, as well as common sense to choose appropriate simplifications. It's not about getting the 'right' answer, but getting a 'reasonable' or 'sensible' answer quickly.

Estimation is a fundamental mathematical skill used to find an approximate answer quickly and efficiently, often when an exact answer isn't needed or when mental calculation is preferred. The most common method involves rounding numbers to one significant figure before performing the calculation. 'One significant figure' means keeping only the first non-zero digit from the left and replacing all other digits with zeros. For example, 48 rounded to one significant figure is 50, and 0.032 rounded to one significant figure is 0.03. When estimating, it's crucial to understand that the result will not be exact, but it should be a reasonable approximation. This technique is particularly useful for checking if a calculator answer is roughly correct or for making quick decisions in everyday situations. Estimation helps develop number sense and an understanding of the magnitude of numbers. It is a critical skill for problem-solving and reasoning in various contexts, from financial planning to scientific calculations. Without estimation, it's easy to make significant errors without realising. Practising estimation helps build confidence and proficiency in handling numbers.
