Triangles are fundamental shapes in geometry, characterised by three straight sides and three angles. A key property of all triangles is that the sum of their interior angles is always 180 degrees. This fact forms the basis for solving many problems involving unknown angles.
There are different types of triangles, each with specific properties:
- Equilateral Triangle: All three sides are of equal length, and all three interior angles are equal (each 60 degrees).
- Isosceles Triangle: Two sides are of equal length, and the angles opposite these equal sides (called base angles) are also equal. The third side and angle are different.
- Scalene Triangle: All three sides are of different lengths, and all three interior angles are different.
- Right-angled Triangle: One of its interior angles is exactly 90 degrees. The side opposite the right angle is called the hypotenuse, and it is always the longest side.
By understanding these classifications and the angle sum property, you can deduce missing angles or side relationships in various geometric figures, especially when dealing with parallel lines, other polygons, or in coordinate geometry. Always remember to clearly state the reasons for your deductions, such as 'angles in a triangle sum to 180°' or 'base angles of an isosceles triangle are equal'.

Triangles are fundamental geometric shapes with three sides and three angles. A key property of all triangles is that the sum of their interior angles always equals 180 degrees. This fact is crucial for finding unknown angles. Triangles can be classified based on their side lengths or angle measures. An equilateral triangle has all three sides equal in length and all three angles equal to 60 degrees. An isosceles triangle has at least two sides of equal length, and the angles opposite those equal sides are also equal. A scalene triangle has all sides of different lengths and all angles of different measures. A right-angled triangle contains one angle exactly equal to 90 degrees. Understanding these classifications and properties allows us to solve various problems involving triangles, such as calculating missing angles, determining side relationships, and proving geometric statements. These foundation methods are essential for more complex geometry topics.
