    Eukaryotic Cells

    Eukaryotic cells are characterized by their complex structure, which includes various organelles, each with specific functions:

    • Nucleus: Contains genetic material and controls cellular activities.
    • Mitochondria: Powerhouse of the cell, responsible for ATP production through respiration.
    • Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): Rough ER is involved in protein synthesis, while smooth ER synthesizes lipids.

    Prokaryotic Cells

    Prokaryotic cells are simpler and lack membrane-bound organelles. Key features include:

    • Nucleoid: Region where the genetic material is located, not enclosed by a membrane.
    • Ribosomes: Smaller than those in eukaryotes, involved in protein synthesis.
    • Cell Wall: Provides structure and protection, often made of peptidoglycan in bacteria.
    • Plasmids: Small, circular DNA molecules that can confer advantageous traits.

    Cell Division

    • Mitosis: A process of cell division that results in two genetically identical daughter cells. Key phases include prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
    • Binary Fission: A method of asexual reproduction in prokaryotes where the cell divides into two identical cells.

    Transport Mechanisms

    • Diffusion: Movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration.
    • Facilitated Diffusion: Movement of molecules across a membrane via transport proteins.
    • Osmosis: The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
    • Active Transport: Movement of substances against their concentration gradient, requiring energy.

    Understanding these concepts is crucial for analyzing how cells function and interact within living organisms.
