Quick explanation

Examine the factors that affect diffusion, specifically: surface area, temperature, concentration gradient, and distance

  • This point belongs to Diffusion, especially Diffusion outcomes.
  • You need to be able to examine the factors that affect diffusion, specifically: surface area, temperature, concentration gradient, and distance.
  • The key ideas to know are Investigate.
  • Use the linked flashcards and practice questions to check recall, then practise applying the idea in an exam-style answer.

Method

Method to Investigate Temperature Effect on Diffusion

1. Fill three beakers with equal volumes of water at different temperatures: 10°C, 25°C, and 40°C. 2. Add a small crystal of dye to the center of each beaker at the same time. 3. Measure the time taken for the dye to spread across a fixed distance in each beaker. 4. Repeat the experiment three times for each temperature and calculate the average time.

Temperature (°C)Time for dye to spread (s)

  1. a

Identify the independent variable in this investigation.

Aim for approximately 1 distinct marking point.
