What this unit covers
- Photosynthesis: Explain photosynthesis as the method by which plants create carbohydrates from basic materials using light energy.
- Photosynthesis: Provide the word equation for photosynthesis: carbon dioxide plus water yields glucose plus oxygen, occurring in the presence of light and chlorophyll.
- Leaf structure: Most leaves are designed with a large surface area and a thin structure, which are beneficial adaptations for the process of photosynthesis.
- Leaf structure: In diagrams and images, recognize the following components of a dicotyledonous leaf: chloroplasts, cuticle, guard cells, stomata, upper and lower epidermis, palisade mesophyll, spongy mesophyll, air spaces, vascular bundles, xylem, and phloem.
