What this unit covers

  • Human population distribution and density: Students should be able to recognize global patterns of human habitation, understand the concept of population density, and analyze how populations are distributed across different regions.
  • Changes in population size: Students should be able to describe and explain the growth patterns of populations, including lag, exponential (log), and carrying capacity phases. They should also be able to discuss birth and death rates, the changes in human populations, and the factors that influence both birth and death rates as well as migration.
  • Population structure: Students should be able to explain the characteristics of population structure in More Economically Developed Countries (MEDCs) and Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDCs), including the use of population pyramids.
  • Managing human population size: Students should be able to assess various approaches to controlling human population growth, including family planning, enhancements in health and education, and national policies that may be either pro-natalist or anti-natalist. Additionally, they should examine a specific country or region's methods for managing its population size.
