They should also understand how mobile devices facilitate communication through SMS messaging, phone calls, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), video calls, and internet access.
- Modelling applications: Students should be familiar with computer modelling applications, which encompass areas such as personal finance, design of bridges and buildings, management of flood waters, traffic control, and weather prediction. They should also understand the pros and cons of utilizing computer modelling as opposed to human efforts.
- Computer controlled systems: Learners should be familiar with computer-controlled systems, which encompass areas such as robotics in manufacturing, production line management, and self-driving vehicles. They should also be able to identify the benefits and drawbacks of utilizing computer-controlled systems in place of human operators.
- School management systems: Students should be familiar with school management systems, which are utilized for handling student enrollment and attendance, as well as for documenting student performance, including the use of computer-assisted learning.
- Booking systems: Learners should be familiar with online booking systems, including their features, applications, benefits, and drawbacks, particularly in contexts such as the travel sector, concerts, cinemas, and sports events.
- Banking applications: Students should be familiar with the features, functions, benefits, and drawbacks of banking applications, including Automatic Teller Machines (ATM) for cash withdrawal, cash or cheque deposits, account balance inquiries, mini statements, bill payments, and money transfers. Additionally, they should understand the characteristics, uses, advantages, and disadvantages of Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT), credit and debit card transactions, cheques, and internet banking.
- Computers in medicine: Students should be familiar with the role of computers in healthcare, including the features and applications of medical information systems, patient records, pharmacy records, and the use of 3D printing for creating prosthetics, tissue engineering, artificial blood vessels, and personalized medications.
- Expert systems: Students should be familiar with expert systems, including their features, applications, and objectives such as mineral exploration, diagnosing car engine issues, medical assessments, chess strategy, financial planning, scheduling delivery routes, and identifying plants and animals. They should also understand the components of an expert system, which include the user interface, inference engine, knowledge base, rules base, and explanation system, as well as how these systems generate potential solutions for various situations.
- Computers in the retail industry: Understand the role and functions of computers in the retail sector, including the features and applications of point of sale (POS) systems and electronic funds transfer at point of sale (EFTPOS) systems. This includes automatic stock file updates and reordering processes for POS systems, as well as the validation of payment cards, chip and PIN technology, contactless payments, Near Field Communication (NFC) transactions, and the interaction between retail and banking systems. Additionally, recognize the characteristics, benefits, and drawbacks of online shopping.
- Recognition systems: Students should be familiar with recognition systems, including their features, applications, benefits, and drawbacks. This includes understanding Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) used in school attendance and multiple-choice tests, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for automated number plate recognition (ANPR), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for tracking items like stock and passports, Near Field Communication (NFC) for smartphone payments, and various biometric recognition methods such as facial, iris, retinal, fingerprint, thumb, hand, and voice recognition.
- Satellite systems: Students should be familiar with satellite systems, including their features, applications, benefits, and drawbacks. This encompasses Global Positioning Systems (GPS), satellite navigation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and media communication systems such as satellite television and satellite phones.
