What this unit covers
- Introduction to probability: Learn to understand and apply the probability scale ranging from 0 to 1. You should express probabilities as fractions, decimals, or percentages. You may need to use data from tables, graphs, or Venn diagrams involving up to two sets. Calculate the probability of a single event. Recognize that the probability of an event not happening is equal to 1 minus the probability of that event occurring, for example, if the probability of a counter being blue is 0.8, what is the probability that it is not blue?
- Relative and expected frequencies: 1 Recognize relative frequency as an approximation of probability, such as using spinner experiment results to estimate the likelihood of a specific outcome. 2 Compute expected frequencies, for instance, applying probability to derive an expected value from a population. This includes grasping the concepts of fairness, bias, and randomness.
- Probability of combined events: Determine the probability of combined events, ensuring that events are considered with replacement. Use the following methods where suitable: sample space diagrams, Venn diagrams (limited to two sets), and tree diagrams, where outcomes are noted at the ends of branches and probabilities are indicated alongside the branches.
