Paper 3Theory (Core)3 marks

The relationship between temperature and kinetic energy is fundamental in understanding states of matter.

Description

Kinetic Energy and Temperature

As the temperature of a substance increases, the kinetic energy of its particles increases, leading to changes in state and behavior of the substance.

  1. a

Explain how increasing temperature affects the motion of particles in a gas.

Description

Temperature and Particle Motion

Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of particles. As temperature increases, the kinetic energy of particles also increases. At absolute zero (-273 °C), particles have minimal kinetic energy and theoretically stop moving.

  1. a

State the temperature at which particle motion stops.

Aim for approximately 1 distinct marking point.
