What this unit covers
- Judaism as a religion that shows concern for others: Judaism emphasizes caring for others through its teachings on love, compassion, and kindness. This includes adhering to the Torah's guidance on being kind, practicing tzedakah (charitable giving), utilizing pushkes (donation boxes), and engaging in gemilut hasadim (acts of kindness).
- Jewish stewardship of the environment: Understanding Jewish stewardship of the environment, which includes (a) the idea that humans are caretakers of the Earth on behalf of G-d, (b) the belief that G-d is the creator of all things and that humans have a duty to protect the Earth, and (c) the principle of tikkun olam, or 'repairing the world', and how it relates to the responsibility of caring for the environment as a gift from G-d. Note: This objective specifically addresses Jewish stewardship and does not cover ethical discussions regarding animal treatment.
- Jewish organisations that relieve poverty: Identify Jewish organizations that provide assistance to those in need, including Tzedek, Jewish Care, and World Jewish Relief. Discuss local or national groups that focus on alleviating poverty in their communities. Explore how various religious communities address both the spiritual and physical needs of individuals affected by poverty or disasters. Examine how Jewish teachings inspire charitable activities.
