Vision impairments like cataracts, long-sightedness (hyperopia), and short-sightedness (myopia) can significantly affect a person's quality of life but can be effectively corrected. Cataracts, which involve a clouding of the eye's natural lens, are typically treated surgically. During this procedure, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial, clear intraocular lens (IOL). This restores the transparency of the eye's focusing mechanism, allowing light to pass through clearly to the retina. Long-sightedness occurs when the eyeball is too short or the lens is too weak, causing light from nearby objects to focus behind the retina. This can be corrected using convex lenses in spectacles or contact lenses, which converge (bring together) light rays before they enter the eye, ensuring they focus directly on the retina. Alternatively, laser surgery can reshape the cornea to increase its curvature, achieving a similar focusing effect. Short-sightedness, on the other hand, happens when the eyeball is too long or the lens is too strong, causing light from distant objects to focus in front of the retina. This condition is corrected using concave lenses, either in spectacles or contact lenses. Concave lenses diverge (spread out) light rays slightly before they enter the eye, allowing them to focus precisely on the retina. Laser eye surgery can also correct myopia by flattening the cornea, reducing its refractive power.

Common defects include cataracts, which involve clouding of the lens, and refractive errors like long-sightedness (hyperopia) and short-sightedness (myopia). Long-sightedness is when light focuses behind the retina, making distant objects clear but near objects blurry. Short-sightedness causes light to focus in front of the retina, resulting in clear near vision but blurry distant vision. Colour blindness is a different type of defect, usually inherited, where certain cone cells in the retina do not function correctly, leading to difficulty distinguishing between specific colours, most commonly red and green.
