Initially, all cells in an embryo are totipotent or pluripotent, meaning they can develop into any type of cell. As development progresses, cells differentiate to form specialised cells, tissues, organs, and ultimately, a complete organism. This specialisation allows different cells to perform specific functions, which is crucial for the efficient operation and survival of the organism. For example, muscle cells differentiate to contract, nerve cells to transmit electrical signals, and red blood cells to transport oxygen. Without differentiation, organisms would simply beundifferentiated masses of cells, unable to carry out the complex processes necessary for life.
