Network Security Fundamentals Revision Notes
Importance of Network Security
Network security is crucial for safeguarding digital assets and ensuring the continuous operation of computer systems. Without proper security measures, networks are susceptible to data breaches, malware attacks, and denial-of-service attempts. This can lead to financial losses, reputational damage, and legal repercussions. Effective network security protects sensitive data, maintains user privacy, and preserves the reliability of network services.
Identifying Network Vulnerabilities
To build a strong defence, organisations must identify weaknesses in their network infrastructure. Penetration testing simulates cyberattacks to uncover vulnerabilities that malicious actors could exploit. Ethical hacking is a broader approach where authorised individuals, known as ethical hackers, use their skills to proactively find and fix security flaws. Both methods provide insights into a network's resilience before 'real' attacks occur.
Methods for Protecting Networks
Once vulnerabilities are identified, several methods can be used to protect networks. Access control mechanisms restrict who can perform specific actions on network resources, often using authentication (e.g., passwords) and authorisation (e.g., user permissions). Physical security measures protect hardware from theft or damage, including security cameras, locked doors, and restricted access areas. Firewalls act as barriers, controlling incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predefined rules, preventing unauthorised access and filtering out malicious data packets.
