To succeed in Paper 1, Section A, you must quickly locate and extract information (retrieval) as well as draw logical conclusions based on evidence from the extract (inference). In nineteenth-century fiction, writers may use unfamiliar language or present details subtly. Retrieval involves finding explicit facts or details from the text, while inference requires you to 'read between the lines' and deduce meanings or motivations that are not directly stated. Practise reading carefully, noting both what is told directly and what is suggested through character actions, description, or tone.
