Retrieving and Inferring from Non-Fiction Revision Notes
Understanding 'Retrieval'
Retrieval questions ask you to locate specific pieces of information that are clearly stated within the non-fiction text. This might involve identifying key facts, dates, names, or events. Look for direct wording that answers the question. It's often helpful to highlight or underline relevant sections as you read. Accuracy is key; make sure your answer directly reflects what the text says.
Mastering 'Inference'
Inference questions require you to deduce meaning that is not explicitly stated. You need to use clues from the text, such as word choice, tone, and context, to draw conclusions about the writer's attitude, purpose, or suggested meanings. Think about 'what does this imply?' or 'what can I gather from this?' Do not introduce outside knowledge; base your inferences solely on the evidence within the given text.
Non-Fiction Texts
The texts will be non-fiction, meaning they are factual and deal with real-world events, ideas, or experiences. Examples include articles, reports, letters, memoirs, and speeches. They will be from the 20th or 21st century. Always consider the context of the text – who wrote it, when, and for what purpose – as this can aid both retrieval and inference.
