In business, understanding the core concepts of revenue, costs, profit, and loss is fundamental to assessing financial health and making strategic decisions. Revenue represents the total income a business generates from its sales of goods or services before any expenses are deducted. It is typically calculated by multiplying the number of units sold by their selling price per unit. Costs, on the other hand, are the expenses incurred in the process of generating that revenue. These can be categorised as fixed costs (expenses that do not change with the level of production, such as rent) and variable costs (expenses that change in direct proportion to the level of production, such as raw materials). Total costs are the sum of fixed and variable costs. Profit is achieved when a business's total revenue exceeds its total costs. This positive difference indicates money remaining after all bills are paid, which can then be reinvested or distributed to owners. Conversely, a loss occurs when total costs are greater than total revenue, meaning the business spent more money than it earned. Businesses aim to maximise profit and minimise losses through effective management of pricing, sales volume, and cost control. Monitoring these financial indicators provides critical insights into operational efficiency and overall business performance, allowing managers to identify areas for improvement and ensure long-term sustainability.
