What this unit covers
- Xylem and phloem: Describe the roles of xylem and phloem: (a) xylem is responsible for transporting water and mineral ions, as well as providing structural support, (b) phloem is responsible for transporting sucrose and amino acids.
- Xylem and phloem: Locate xylem and phloem in diagrams and images of cross-sections from the roots, stems, and leaves of non-woody dicot plants.
- Water uptake: Recognize root hair cells in diagrams and images and describe their roles.
- Water uptake: Explain that the extensive surface area of root hairs enhances the absorption of water and minerals.
- Transpiration: Explain transpiration as the process where water vapor is lost from leaves.
- Transpiration: Indicate that water evaporates from mesophyll cell surfaces into air spaces and then diffuses out of leaves through stomata as vapor.
- Translocation: Explain translocation as the process of moving sucrose and amino acids through the phloem from areas of production to areas of utilization or storage.
- Translocation: Identify sources in plants as the regions that produce and release sucrose or amino acids, and identify sinks as the regions that utilize or store these substances.
