Ions and ionic bonds outcomes7 objectives
- Explain how positive ions, called cations, and negative ions, known as anions, are formed.
- Recognize that an ionic bond is a strong attraction between ions with opposite charges.
- Illustrate how ionic bonds are formed between elements from Group I and Group VII, using dot-and-cross diagrams.
- Outline the characteristics of ionic compounds, including (a) their high melting and boiling points, and (b) their ability to conduct electricity when dissolved in water or melted, but not when solid.
- Describe the giant lattice structure of ionic compounds, which consists of a regular pattern of alternating positive and negative ions.
- Explain how ionic bonds are formed between metallic and non-metallic ions, including the use of dot-and-cross diagrams.
- Discuss the properties of ionic compounds in relation to their structure and bonding, including (a) high melting and boiling points, and (b) good electrical conductivity when in solution or molten, but poor when solid.
