What this unit covers
- Electrolysis: Explain electrolysis as the breakdown of an ionic compound when it is either molten or dissolved in water, facilitated by an electric current.
- Electrolysis: Recognize the components of basic electrolytic cells: (a) the anode is the positive electrode, (b) the cathode is the negative electrode, and (c) the electrolyte is the molten or aqueous substance undergoing electrolysis.
- Hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells: Identify that a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell generates electricity by utilizing hydrogen and oxygen, resulting in water as the sole chemical byproduct.
- Hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells: Explain the pros and cons of employing hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells compared to gasoline or petrol engines in vehicles.
