What this unit covers

  • General properties of waves: Understand that waves carry energy without moving matter from one place to another.
  • General properties of waves: Explain wave motion using examples of vibrations in ropes and springs, as well as through experiments with water waves.
  • Light: Utilize ray diagrams to explain the concepts of normal, angle of incidence, and angle of reflection.
  • Light: Explain how a vertical plane mirror forms an optical image and describe its characteristics in relation to the object, such as being the same size, equidistant from the mirror, and laterally inverted.
  • Electromagnetic spectrum: Identify the primary sections of the electromagnetic spectrum (radio, microwave, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma rays) arranged by frequency and wavelength.
  • Electromagnetic spectrum: Understand that all types of electromagnetic waves move at the same high speed in a vacuum and nearly the same speed in air.
  • Sound: Explain how sound is created by objects that vibrate.
  • Sound: Identify that humans can hear sounds in the frequency range of approximately 20 Hz to 20 kHz.
