Estimation, a crucial scientific skill, involves making a reasonable guess about a quantity or measurement when precise data is unavailable or unnecessary. It provides a quick way to check calculations, predict outcomes, or understand the order of magnitude of a value. For example, estimating the number of cells in a tissue sample or the concentration of a pollutant in a large body of water can guide further, more precise investigations. Estimations are particularly useful when conducting preliminary assessments, designing experiments, or when the resources for exact measurement are limited. They allow scientists to quickly identify whether a result is plausible or whether further investigation is needed.
