In cell biology, scientists must measure and compare extremely small structures, making SI prefixes and standard form crucial tools. The main prefixes used to express such tiny values are: milli (m, 10⁻³), micro (µ, 10⁻⁶), nano (n, 10⁻⁹), and pico (p, 10⁻¹²). These prefixes represent divisions of a metre: for instance, 1 micrometre (µm) is one-millionth of a metre. Conversions between these units rely on multiplying or dividing by powers of ten. Standard form—scientific notation—further assists by expressing numbers as a × 10ᵇ, where 1 ≤ |a| < 10 and b is an integer. This makes calculations and communication about very small quantities both accurate and efficient.
